Suzanne Prentice

Introduction Suzanne Prentice was born on September 19, 1958, in Invercargill, and from a young age, it was clear she was destined to be a star. Her journey into the world of country music began early, and with it came a string of achievements that would soon make her a household name.

We honour her incredible contributions to the world of music, as well as her influence and legacy within our community.

Suzanne’s Career:

From her early performances to her chart-topping hits, Suzanne Prentice has left an indelible mark on the New Zealand music industry. Her powerful voice, combined with heartfelt lyrics, has resonated with audiences both here and abroad.

• 1974: Suzanne won her first Golden Guitar Award at the Country Music Awards of Australia for Female Vocalist of the Year. She went on to win this prestigious award two more times in 1977 and 1978.

• 1982: Her most successful single, "When I Dream", peaked at number 11 on the New Zealand charts, solidifying her as a force in country music.

• Albums: Suzanne’s discography is a testament to her enduring talent. Some of her chart-topping albums include "Dreamin' My Dreams", "One Day At a Time", and "So Precious to Me". Each album reflected her growth as an artist and her commitment to creating music that resonates with audiences of all ages.

• International Recognition: Her work wasn’t confined to New Zealand alone. She was also recognised in Australia, where she won awards and was inducted into the Roll of Renown at the Tamworth Country Music Awards. Her success was truly international, taking her music beyond New Zealand’s borders.

In 1995, Suzanne’s outstanding contribution to music was recognised by the New Zealand government when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to music.

In 2016, she was awarded the Benny Award by the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand, which is the highest honour given to New Zealand entertainers. This prestigious award solidified her place in the hearts of not only country music fans but also the wider entertainment community.

Political Career & Service to the Community:

In addition to her incredible musical career, Suzanne has also served hercommunity through her foray into politics. In 2010, she ran for mayor of Invercargill, demonstrating her deep-rooted commitment to her hometown and her belief in the importance of public service.
